The Rijnhaven is in an uproar after a bizarre discovery that raises many questions. Early this morning, a giant tentacle washed ashore on the quay of the old harbor, to the great fright of passersby and dockworkers. The mysterious body part, estimated to be about five meters long, is currently being examined by experts.

The discovery was made by a local fisherman, Jan van Dijk, who was walking along the quay during his morning rounds. “At first I thought it was a large piece of rope or netting that had been left behind by a ship,” Van Dijk says. “But when I got closer, I saw that it must have been something living. It felt rough and cold, as if it had been in the water for a while.”

The tentacle, which is slippery and dark gray in color, is reminiscent of that of a giant squid, but its exact origin remains unclear. Biologists from the University of Leiden are on site to take samples and conduct DNA research. “This is exceptional,” says Professor Anja Visser, an expert in marine biology. “Although large squids are known for their presence in the deep sea, it is unheard of for such a creature to end up in the Maas estuary.”

Some residents of Rotterdam see the discovery as confirmation of old city legends about the so-called Kraken of the Maas. These ancient stories tell of a monster that is said to live deep in the Maas, responsible for the disappearance of ships in the Golden Age. Although scientists have always dismissed these stories as mere fables, the discovery of the tentacle has reignited the conversation.

Harbor worker Piet Vermeer, who examined the tentacle up close, is convinced that it is a Kraken: “My grandfather used to tell me about those stories. I never believed him, but when you see this, you start to have your doubts. What if it is real?”

The municipality of Rotterdam has set up a security perimeter around the find and is calling on residents to stay away from the Rijnhaven until the investigation is completed. There has also been speculation about environmental change and its influence on the behavior of deep-sea animals.

Once the results of the investigation are known, more will become clear about the origin of the tentacle. Until then, the Rijnhaven will remain shrouded in mystery, and many are wondering if this is a one-off event or the beginning of something much bigger going on in the depths of the Maas.

Update: Experts expect to provide more information about their findings later this week. Until then, the city will remain in suspense.
